Growing Towards Tomorrow

Black History Month

We celebrated Black History Month by doing activities in our own classrooms.  We also had an assembly about some influential black people in history.

We talked about many black and mixed heritage people for example

Marcus Rashford - A modern-day history-maker, Rashford has used his voice to step up and make real change where he knew it was needed. Throughout his career, Rashford recognised that he has a platform on which he can influence and has used this to campaign tirelessly against racism, homelessness and child hunger in the UK.

Mary Seacole - Mary's nursing skills took her to Panama in the year of 1851 where she nursed people who were affected by cholera disease. Mary attended to soldiers who fought in the Crimea War, which lasted for 3 years. She funded her own trip to Crimea because she was refused government assistance.

John Kent - Originally the first black police officer was thought to be employed in the 1960's in the Metropolitan Police. However, John Kent was then identified as the first, initially thought to be in Carlisle, but through research this has since extended to Maryport, Carlisle, then Longtown, in Cumberland.

We did lots of artwork and fact files.
