Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium is allocated to school through an assessment of children from low-income families who are currently known to be eligible for Free School Meals in both mainstream and non-mainstream schools, as well as those children who have been in looked after care continuously for more than six months and children who have a parent serving in the armed forces.

Pupil Premium was introduced in April 2011, and paid to local authorities by means of a specific grant based on the January school census figures for pupils registered as eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) and those who are looked after from Reception age to Year 11.

Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit, however, the funding is intended to effect pupils from low-income families and disadvantaged pupil groups, with an emphasis on raising attainment.  The purpose of the Pupil Premium funding is to close the gap between those children on FSM and those who are not.  Disadvantage has always been equated with a reduced likelihood to succeed.
