Primary PSHE/RSE Intent, Implement, Impact Statement
Intent
The intention of the Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) curriculum at our Primary School is to promote the holistic development of our pupils, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to lead healthy, responsible, and fulfilling lives. We aim to foster an environment that encourages respect, empathy, and understanding among all individuals, ensuring that each child feels safe, valued, and prepared for the complexities of modern life.
Our PSHE/RSE curriculum is designed to:
- Develop Well-rounded Individuals: We seek to cultivate self-awareness, resilience, and confidence in every pupil, enabling them to make informed choices and develop interpersonal skills.
- Promote Healthy Relationships: Our programme prioritises the importance of respectful relationships, understanding consent, and recognising diversity, ensuring that children learn to appreciate different perspectives and lifestyles.
- Equip for Life Skills: We aim to give children the tools to navigate societal issues, including mental health awareness, online safety, financial literacy, and global citizenship, preparing them for future challenges.
- Learn to be Safe and Healthy: We focus on teaching children how to maintain their physical and mental health, understand personal safety, and make positive lifestyle choices that contribute to their overall wellbeing.
Implementation
The PSHE/RSE curriculum is implemented through a carefully structured, age-appropriate programme that is integrated into the wider school curriculum. Key components of our implementation strategy include:
- Curriculum Framework: We follow a comprehensive curriculum map that aligns with the statutory requirements for RSE and is tailored to the needs of our student population. This includes thematic units that cover key content areas, from healthy relationships to emotional literacy and safety awareness.
- Active Learning Approaches: We employ a variety of teaching methodologies, including role-play, group discussions, and projects, which actively engage students and promote experiential learning. This ensures that children can relate the content to their own lives and understand its relevance.
- Integration with Other Subjects: PSHE/RSE is embedded across various subjects, such as science, geography, and religious education, providing context and reinforcing the learning objectives through interdisciplinary connections.
- Involvement of Stakeholders: We actively engage parents, guardians, and the wider community in the PSHE/RSE curriculum through workshops, consultations, and sharing of resources. This partnership fosters an inclusive approach and strengthens the support systems for pupils.
- Continuous Professional Development: Staff receive regular training on current best practices and statutory guidance in PSHE/RSE, ensuring they are well-equipped to deliver high-quality education that meets the evolving needs of students.
- British Values, SMSC and Protective Characteristics: British values, spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) education, and protective characteristics are interwoven throughout the curriculum. This integration ensures that pupils develop a strong understanding of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance, promoting a well-rounded, inclusive educational environment.
- Reactionary Curriculum: We have a reactionary curriculum that is responsive to current issues, including matters within the local community and concerns raised by children in school. This adaptability ensures that our curriculum remains relevant and addresses the immediate needs of our student body.
Impact
The impact of our PSHE/RSE programme is evident in the personal development, behaviour, and wellbeing of our pupils. We strive for the following outcomes:
- Enhanced Emotional Wellbeing: Pupils demonstrate increased confidence in expressing their emotions, as evidenced by feedback and assessments. They are able to articulate their feelings and seek support when needed.
- Positive Relationships: Observations indicate that pupils engage in respectful interactions, appreciate diversity, and demonstrate empathy towards peers. The school culture promotes inclusivity and reduces bullying incidents.
- Enhanced Social Skills: Observations and feedback indicate that students exhibit respect and empathy towards others, contributing to a positive school environment. Pupils report feeling safe, valued, and included, which is reflected in high levels of engagement and participation in school activities.
- Knowledge and Understanding: Assessments demonstrate that pupils have a solid understanding of key concepts related to relationships, health, and personal finance. They articulate their learning confidently and apply it in their daily lives.
- Better Preparedness for Challenges: Feedback from students and staff reflects an appreciation for the life skills taught through the curriculum. Pupils report feeling more equipped to handle issues such as peer pressure, mental health problems, and online safety.
- Positive Behaviour and Attitudes: We observe a significant reduction in incidents of bullying and anti-social behaviour, attributed to pupils' understanding of respect, consent, and healthy relationships. This creates a harmonious and safe learning environment for all.
- Engagement with Learning: Student engagement is high, with evidence of participation in discussions and lesson activities. Our assessment indicates that our PSHE/RSE curriculum is effectively supporting the overall academic and personal development of our pupils.
At Larkspur, we are committed to continuous improvement within our PSHE/RSE curriculum, ensuring it remains relevant, effective, and aligned with the needs of our pupils.
