Welcome to Maths at Larkspur
Welcome to our Maths home page. This section is designed to keep our pupils, parents and Larkspur Community up to date with the current key priorities within Maths, our exciting plans for the forthcoming academic year and how you can work with us to achieve these goals.
Maths – Intent, Implementation, Impact
Intent
At Larkspur Community Primary School, we aim to foster a deep understanding, confidence, and enjoyment of mathematics for all pupils. Our intent is that every child, regardless of their starting point, will develop the knowledge, skills, and resilience needed to succeed in mathematics and beyond. This aligns with our commitment to Learning for Life, helping pupils build curiosity, independence and a lifelong love of problem-solving.
We want our pupils to:
- Secure fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics.
- Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, making connections, and justifying their thinking.
- Apply their mathematical understanding to solve problems in a variety of contexts.
We are committed to ensuring that children recognise the relevance of mathematics in everyday life and the wider world, and leave us as enthusiastic, independent and critical thinkers. Through high expectations and encouragement, we nurture a mindset of Believe You Can, enabling pupils to approach challenges with confidence. Our inclusive approach ensures Everyone Belongs, with all learners valued and supported to achieve their best.
Implementation
Curriculum Design:
We follow the NCETM Curriculum Prioritisation Materials from Year 1–6 to provide carefully sequenced, small-step learning that builds deep and connected understanding. Early Years currently follow White Rose Maths for their long-term plan but will use the Mastering Number programme from September 2026, with resources designed or sourced to ensure coverage of shape, space and measure. This structured progression supports pupils in developing skills and independence.
Memory Maths:
All maths lessons begin with Memory Maths. Children complete four retrieval questions based on key facts they need to know and should be secure in. These questions are designed by the teacher, with support from the Maths Coordinator if needed, based on assessments, teacher judgement and planning.
Lesson Consistency:
All staff follow a shared lesson design to ensure consistency across the school. Working walls in every classroom support current learning and provide visual scaffolds to aid independence.
Teaching for Mastery:
Lessons embed fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving. Children use concrete, pictorial, and abstract representations to develop secure conceptual understanding. Problem-solving is woven into every lesson to encourage perseverance and flexibility in thinking — modelling a growth mindset central to Learning for Life.
Resources:
High-quality resources are carefully sourced or designed to ensure clarity, challenge, and progression.
Assessment:
Formative assessment is used daily to address misconceptions and inform next steps. Summative assessments are carried out regularly and analysed rigorously to identify gaps, inform teaching, and guide targeted interventions.
Support and Challenge:
Targeted interventions are delivered swiftly to close gaps, while depth opportunities extend pupils’ thinking and ensure all children are challenged. Our inclusive and responsive approach ensures that Everyone Belongs, with learning tailored so every child feels valued and supported.
Impact
As a result of our carefully structured curriculum and consistent teaching approach, pupils at Larkspur Community Primary School:
- Demonstrate a secure and deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
- Are fluent in number facts and can apply these efficiently in increasingly complex contexts.
- Reason with confidence, justifying their ideas using appropriate mathematical language.
- Approach problem-solving with resilience, creativity, and independence — key elements of Learning for Life.
- Recognise the value and application of mathematics in everyday life and the wider world.
- Achieve well against national expectations, with gaps closed swiftly through timely intervention.
- Develop confidence, aspiration, and pride in their achievements, demonstrating our Believe You Can driver.
- Learn within an inclusive community where support, respect and equity ensure Everyone Belongs.
Ultimately, our pupils leave Larkspur as confident, enthusiastic mathematicians, equipped with the skills and mindset needed to succeed in their next stage of education and beyond.
