Climate Action Plan
At Larkspur Community School, we believe every child deserves a good future. A future shaped by clean air, thriving nature and a healthy planet. Our school at the heart of our community. We recognise our responsibility to take meaningful climate action. By helping our pupils understand the role they can play in creating positive change.
Our Climate Action Plan 2025–2026 sets out a clear, practical roadmap. This is to reduce our environmental impact and embed sustainability across school life. From improving the energy efficiency of our buildings to supporting pupils as environmental leaders. The plan brings together actions across teaching, curriculum, behaviour, operations and community partnerships.
The plan is built on three core principles:
- Lead by example: We commit to manage our school responsibly. To save energy, reduce waste, improve our outdoor environment and make sustainable choices.
- Learn together: Pupils, staff and families all play an active part in building a culture of sustainability. We can do this with learning woven through the curriculum and everyday school experiences.
- Take measurable action: Our priorities are clear, achievable and monitored termly. This ensures progress is visible to our community and our goals stay ambitious.
This is not just a school policy, it is a collective pledge. A pledge to inspire our pupils, protect our environment and prepare young people for the greener world they will inherit. We are proud to share our journey and look forward to working with our community to make a lasting difference.
Eco Council
Each year, Larkspur Community Primary School selects a new Eco Council. This is a team of pupils dedicated to making our school greener, cleaner and more environmentally responsible. Previous members are welcome to remain, helping us maintain continuity and build on our successes.
The Eco Council works closely with the School Council. This ensures a strong pupil voice and decisions that reflect wellbeing and sustainability. Together, they help ensure that every action we take contributes to a healthier planet. Creating a more environmentally aware school community.
What the Eco Council Does
Our Eco Council meets regularly to discuss, plan and lead projects that focus on:
- Improving and maintaining the school environment
Keeping our grounds tidy, safe and welcoming for everyone. - Ensuring school decisions are ecologically sound
Encouraging responsible choices and environmentally friendly practices in everything from energy use to classroom resources. - Raising awareness of global environmental issues
- By educating pupils and staff about single‑use plastics, carbon emissions, and, ultimately, the importance of sustainable living, we can inspire more mindful choices and promote a healthier planet.”
Each year, the Eco Council carries out a full environmental review of the school. This helps identify areas where we can make changes and move toward more sustainable alternatives.
Our Focus for the Spring Term
This term, the Eco Council is concentrating on two key actions:
1. Banning Single‑Use Plastics in School
Pupils are leading the way in helping us reduce unnecessary waste, encouraging everyone to switch to sustainable alternatives.
2. Promoting Reusable Water Bottles
We will be running a whole‑school competition to raise awareness and celebrate the use of reusable water bottles.
Planting For The Future
In 2024–25, pupils at Larkspur Community Primary School took part in a Trees for Schools project supported by LMAX Group, GreenTheUK and the Royal Forestry Society. Together we planted 100 climate-resilient trees on the school grounds as part of a hands-on workshop where children learned about tree planting, climate change and biodiversity. These new trees will help enhance our outdoor learning spaces, improve air quality, support wildlife and create shaded areas for future forest school activities, leaving a lasting environmental legacy for our whole school community.

Year 6 tackle the sustainability of our school
In Geography, Year 6 have been learning about sustainability and what it means in practice. As part of this work, they evaluated how sustainable our school currently is and identified ways we could improve. Pupils suggested a range of thoughtful actions, including recycling old uniform, banning paper plates and cups, switching to a local fruit supplier, introducing a compost bin for fruit waste, and appointing light monitors to ensure lights are switched off when rooms are not in use. They shared their ideas by writing a formal letter to Mrs Anglesea, who later visited Year 6 to listen to their suggestions and discuss their ideas in person.
