Intent

Our Art and Design curriculum is intended to expose children to a wide range of art forms and artists, to develop mastery skills and techniques and encourage a ‘believe we can’ mindset so that pupils feel comfortable enough to take risks and make mistakes.

We intend that pupils become

  • proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art and design techniques
  • creative through exploring, inventing and producing original work
  • exposed to a range of famous artists and designers from different eras and cultures
  • articulate in their use of subject specific vocabulary when evaluating and analysing theirs and their peers work
  • able to transfer art knowledge and skills to other curriculum areas

Implementation

The Art and Design curriculum is implemented through a carefully structured, age appropriate programme that is integrated into the wide school curriculum. This scheme that we use is Kapow and each lesson typically contains :

  • stimuli which encourages children to be creative, original and explorative
  • teaching pupils to use tools and multi media with control, while mastering techniques
  • opportunities for children to analyse and evaluate theirs and their peers’ work in a setting in which everyone belongs
  • studies of artists, craft makers and designers across various disciplines and periods

Through a carefully planned, systematic approach to art and design all pupils will :

  • realise the value of their work and communicate their ideas with confidence
  • develop critical thinking skills and interpret the world through various art forms
  • develop appreciation and enjoyment of art and design which will continue in their learning for life from childhood to adulthood
