Early Years

Maths is an important part of learning for children in the early years because it provides vital life skills. They will help children problem solve, measure and develop their own spatial awareness, and teach them how to use and understand shapes.

Take a look at the video below. There lots of ideas on how to introduce your child to maths at an early age.

Maths is great fun in Early Years.  Wouldn’t you just love to try some of these activities!

Learning to count and recognise numbers is very important at the beginning of the children’s school life.

They even work independently on tasks.

We also challenge the children to explain their findings and tell us how they worked out the answers.

Practicing the formation of the numbers is vital to their education.

They are trying very hard!

Numberblocks

Numberblocks is a great resource that helps children learn and understand numbers.  It is very important for children to learn the value of a number and what better way than through play.

Year 1

In Year 1 we have been learning how to add numbers using counters. We have been using equipment to show us the value of the numbers we are adding together.

Year 2

Year 2 Interactive Maths

Today we used Base ten and arrow cards to represent different two digit numbers. We worked with our talk partners to improve our knowledge of the activity.

Year 3

Partitioning

We have been learning how to partition 3-digit numbers.  We used Base10 to help us to see the 100s, 10s and ones more clearly.

Year 4

Maths In Year 4

In Year 4 we have to do a national multiplication tables check in June.  To support this we have a very big focus on times tables.  We use Hit the Button, Times Table Rock Stars and our times tables practice books.

Year 5

Fluent in Five In Year 5

Today Year 5 are practising the skills they covered last week. This is a memory jogger for them.

Year 6

Maths in Year 6

In Year 6 we have been learning about place value to 10 million interactively.

Using hoops to support our understanding of place value made getting to know larger numbers a little easier.

Who can make the largest integer?

Using bean bags for counters the children worked in teams to try to make the largest 7 digit number against the clock.  They felt confident when saying larger numbers.
