STEM Challenge - Investigating Rock
In this STEM challenge, children compare and contrast rock types by investigating texture, appearance, colour, strength and hardness. We looked at specific vocabulary to describe texture; rough, smooth, gritty etc. Examining the rock carefully using a magnifier, the children looked for identifying evidence of the different types of rock. Most rock types have distinctive colours that are easily viewed without breaking the surface. The effect that the colour of the local stone has on the appearance of buildings was also examined. The next activity was a scratch test. This determines the hardness of each rock. Using the same rock samples as before the children tested the extent to which the surface of each can be marked with a range of tools.
